Rainwater Tanks Maintenance Guide - 06.10.10

Here is a simple schedule you can follow to keep your rainwater tank working properly all year round.

Monthly schedule

  • Remove leaves and debris from gutters and/or gutter guards
  • Clean leaf guards on rain heads (if fitted)
  • Check first flush device (if fitted)
  • Check the mesh screen on the tank overflow outlet (if fitted)
  • Visually check all pipe work around pump and tank for leaks.

6 monthly schedule

  • Remove overhanging branches from your roof area
  • Check roof and flashings for defects
  • Make sure that all tank lids and screens are securely in place
  • Listen to your pump for any unusual noises and check the pressure is OK
  • Check for any water around the pump and taps for leaks
  • Clean or replace water filter cartridges – if fitted (water filters are mainly used for rainwater tanks that supply water for internal use)
  • Check that your rainwater has not become a mosquito breeding ground. If mosquitoes/larvae are present, attempt to establish the entry point and close, if possible

12 monthly schedule

  • Check the tank stand/base to make sure there are no cracks or subsidence
  • Check inside the tank for sediment/sludge build-up. Note, a properly maintained tank will accumulate minimal sediment – only requiring removal after several years or more. If there is a thick layer of sludge covering the side and bottom of your tank, you may wish to completely empty your tank – if you are unsure, contact us.
